These are exactly what is needed for starting to remove tight/stubborn roll pins, the longer punches are fine for total removal…but these make starting them a dream.
I have had the longer set of these for years, learned the hard way …that some roll pins can be very tight….and the longer punches can fail on those. These shorty’s dont have that long shaft problem , nothing to flex or ouright bend…start the stubborn pin with these….finish with the longer punch.
P.S. Saw where Grace USA had a lifetime warranty, a few of my longer punches had failed starting pins over the years…they sent me replacement punches immediately…no questions asked…NICE !!! Now all 7 shorty’s and all 7 longer punches are ready to go.

I already have the complete set of long Grace USA roll pin punches and holders, and I bought these short punches to cure an issue I had. I was using the long style 1/16 an 5/32 punches to drive out pins on my modern sporting rifle and I bent them because they are long and razor thin and the pins are tight. These short ones help you knock the pin loose, and then you finish with the longer punch if necessary.
All that being said, let’s get back to the bent punches. Their site says they have a no questions asked warranty on all of their products, so I sent an email to their customer service inbox to see if I could get replacements for my bent punches. The owner of the company quickly emailed me back and got my address, and sent me 2 new punches no questions asked. They arrived in 2 days. That’s a pretty awesome effort to keep customers happy, and it’s as critical to my decision to buy this set of short punches as was my experience with the quality of the ones I already owned. I couldn’t be happier with the product or the company.

this set is what nobody tells you, you need. get the roll pin moving with this set of punches, then you can
go to the longer punch. if you try to use the longer punches first they just bend or brake. need to get the
pin to move. with the short punch then finish up with the longer set.

Great for Building an AR Pattern Rifle!

I built my firs AR with standard punches and the vice-grip method. It worked but it wasn’t the best way.
This is the right way to do it. These punches work great for general assembly of an AR-15 pattern modern sporting rifle.
The short tip helps avoid bending (as long as you do your part) while the little nub at the end drives the roll pin properly without crushing the edges (although it may take the finish off the end of the pin). Remember to ensure everything is lined up and to use the proper sized hammer.
The one downside with these punches is disassembly. They are not long enough to drive pins all the way out. They can get pins started very easily, allowing for another, longer punch to drive it fully out, but that is the nature of their design.

Excellent product for gunsmithing. I would recommend this set in conjunction with a standard length punch set as well though. There may be occasions that you will have trouble reaching the depth you need with these. One example would be if you are trying to drive out the bolt catch retaining pin on an AR15. I would still recommend starting with this punch and then finishing the final push with a regular punch. Good news is that this set will wonderfully do 95% of everything that you will need to do on an AR and a single cheap standard length punch can do the rest. I have bent way too many standard length punches doing gunsmithing work and this set has been a lifesaver. Highly recommended.

Fit and finish of these punches are excellent. Really it’s a genius idea to prevent bending and breaking of your normal length, smallest sized pin punches. No matter how great the quality, the smallest two sizes will always be susceptible to this problem. Physics is physics. By reducing the length of the punch, the issue is mitigated. Sure, it’s an extra tool set in your box, but it’s worth the extra step to use these starter punches first, particularly when dealing with the smallest pins or roll springs. Grace USA makes a matching 7-piece set in regular length too, and they guarantee their products for life no matter how you might break them. I called for a replacement 1/16th punch from the regular length set and they didn’t even ask a solitary question about how it broke. They took my address and I had the replacement in my mailbox within 3 days. Amazing customer service. Highly recommended for both this set and the full length set. Starrett’s are also excellent quality punches, as I own some of those too.
